Fountain from 1507
Fountain from 1507
The public fountain was built in the 1500s under Frederick, King of Sicily, by Giacomo Guindacio, a Neapolitan nobleman. The fountain’s inner structure includes ancient wash basins and two spouts—one dating back to 1507, the other added in 1888 by Antonio Guglielmini. The older spout bears the coats of arms of the Sanseverino and Guindazio families, along with a Latin inscription carved into the marble offering a blessing to all visitors and passersby, wishing that the fountain may quench their thirst. Between the two spouts is a marble slab engraved with a verse from The Canticle of the Creatures by Saint Francis of Assisi.
